SharePoint's default UI and styles are just deadly. Very Microsoft looking, geeky, and uncool. (Not sure if I originated this, but I use the term 'SharePointy' to describe this. Usage is like "Our goal is to eliminate all of the SharePointy-ness from the site.")
I actually think that this is a huge issue for Microsoft, and one that's in no way limited to SharePoint. The recent releases of Silverlight and the Expression series of tools has suffered from a rather obviously inferior designs, at least in the sample apps and examples that were released initially. The tools are fantastic, of course, and the technology is superior, but until the graphical design and orginality of the ideas presented in the designs are superior to Flash, Microsoft will always play catchup. And always have a very difficult time even doing that succesfully.
Ian Morrish's wssdemo site has posted a list of "Top SharePoint WCM Web Sites.

Some are quite good; almost all meet my basic criteria of success in implimenting SharePoint -- you can't tell at all that it's really MOSS behind the scenes!
